This got buried sometime back when I hit a tough spot on the shading of the horse, but this has been a productive week artistically, and I finally got this done while the family watched football.
The original inspiration for this was watching the funeral of Ronald Reagan. I have always found the caparisoned horse a powerful image, but found Sargent York a bit too calm since the previous time I was aware of was Kennedy's funeral. The caparisoned horse then was a black gelding named Black Jack...one of the last horses actually bred by the US goverment--he actually wore the US brand on his shoulder--and his restless spirit during Kennedy's funeral left a lasting impression on me. Being a dressage rider, I found it easy to envision this restless passage behind the cassion.
The result is this image...my own personal tribute, not only to a lost president, but to all our soldiers we have lost...
